Lantra Use of Brushcutters Course

Lantra Use of Brushcutter and Trimmer course

YouTube player

Strimmers (with nylon cord) and brushcutters (rigid blades, usually steel) have become an indispensable tool for quick and effective grounds maintenance. They use a two- or four-stroke engine to power the head, which causes the head to rotate at high speed. Clearly any machine with a cutting head rotating at high speed is potentially dangerous, both to the operators and passers-by. Partly because they can be bought and used by the general public, there is a tendency to underestimate these risks. Correct brushcutter training will help the operator to minimise these risks and work both safely and efficiently.

The Lantra course – Use of Brushcutters and Trimmers – is a 2-day course for novices, or a 1-day course for experienced operators, with integrated assessment by the instructor. This Lantra Certificate of Competence is recognised by the HSE, but if candidates wish to gain an NPTC Certificate of Competence the Lantra Training they have received should equip them to pass the NPTC assessment.

Formal strimmer and brushcutter training is a legal requirement under PUWER – the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations – but a Certificate of Competence is not (although it is recommended).
